Everyone has an alter ego and Genie is mine. Childhood tales of the Arabian nights and Scheherazade’s desperate 1001 nights was an inspiration for me in many subtle ways. Internet marketing is not an easy trade but neither is a day job. Life is what you reach out and choose to take. To keep it you often have to struggle and to make it to the next day you often have to persevere with what you are doing and with little proof that you are on the right track.
The best way to communicate with people is to tell them stories. The human race have maintained their history with stories and the transmission of important information is often delivered with allegory. Most products have basic instructions on or with them but the advertising for the product is a story of how it is used by real people.
When gurus say to “sell the benefits, not the features”, they are not saying that you should tell people that the REAL internet marketers are people who work in shorts in the tropics with a pine colada in their hand. They are asking you to share something personal with your clients. If your system enables them to earn enough money to live that lifestyle and you are living proof that it worked for you and you live like this, then this may be an example for you to use.
If you are someone who likes to ski however, this might not appeal to you.
Even so, what YOU choose will work, because it is the BENEFIT behind the story, the metaphor, that has meaning. Stories have a power all their own. As humans we automatically complete a story before it ends and then are often delighted if we’re wrong, because we love surprises. We cannot help but get involved in stories and want to find out how they develop. Soaps are a great example of how happy endings are not really what we want. We prefer a never ending story, with high drama, like a 1001 nights.

This is my story…
I was a bookseller in my day job. I could not have asked for a better job for me. Financially though it was a day job for a set wage which never improved.
So I quit my job and caught the boat to internet marketing success to see what I could find there. There was a huge storm of tutorials that took us off course and one day the boat slid into a whirlpool of too-much-information which spun my head and spat me out on a website beach on a desert island in the middle of nowhere.
The sun sent me a little crazy I think. No longer was I Miss Bookowl buried in shelves, I was suddenly Genie, able to ride a magic carpet and grant a wish or two. I tamed the Google monster and started to build a domain. Then people started to come to me with questions and I helped them to do the same.
That’s my story anyway. You did click the about link. It didn’t say ‘click here for the absolute truth’.
Fact is I’m nobody special, just an ordinary somebody, my name is Julie Francis, and I’m just trying to make a living like you. I’ll give you facts and I’ll tell you some stories but you’ll always know which is which. If the facts help you in some way then I’m granting wishes. If the stories help me connect with you and take you on a magic carpet ride then ‘Genie’ my alter ego is helping to make the journey more fun.
If you have questions and need answers, contact me from the contact form and we’ll see what I can do. Mostly this blog is used to point to new products that can help people with web marketing. Some posts just link to the product so you can evaluate it yourself. Some products I review if I buy and try them out for myself. Some products I am selling myself .
If you follow a link to a product and buy it, I probably gain a small commission from the owner for linking to it. Like I said, I’m just trying to make a living like everyone else. I do send you lots of free stuff as well though if you sign up for the newsletter or subscribe to the blog, or comment!
If you do connect with any posts, please leave me a comment. You’ll instantly get an email from me with a link to a gift or “reward”. It gets lonely on a desert island sometimes, it’s nice when someone drops in to chat. It’s my way of saying thanks for commenting.
If you cannot see the comment box, click on the title of the post so it displays on a single page and the comment box will show underneath. Don’t forget to leave your email address for your reward.
Wishing you well with all your dreams,
Genie
